IS STRAIGHT THE NEW SQUARE?

This is a very good article (Details magazine, Sept 2006) touching on the issue of 'heterophobia' and how gay people are becoming more and more influential in a lot of aspects in the US of A, especially, hollywood, as oppose to straight men. Are straight men the new square? Opinions are welcome.

Gay men are influencing culture more than ever. Welcome to the age of heterophobia—in which the straight man could become the victim.

It was bound to happen. In July, officials in Provincetown, Massachusetts, had to hold a public meeting to discuss the rise, in their quaint, ultraliberal Cape Cod vacation village, of hate speech. According to news reports, police in the legendarily gay-friendly town got “numerous complaints” during Independence Day weekend of venomous insults shouted on the street. At straight people.

Of course, no one is suggesting that getting called “breeder” is in any way comparable to the very real violence and civil-rights challenges that gay people in this country face every day. But even as educated, enlightened segments of society are more on guard than ever against homophobia, showing how accepting they are with plenty of not-that-there’s-anything-wrong-with-it joshing (as when Lance Armstrong cracks anal-sex jokes on ESPN at the expense of his gay-for-pay friend Jake “Brokeback” Gyllenhaal), there’s a new phenomenon lurking beneath the tranquil surface: heterophobia.

The term heterophobia has actually existed in academia for a decade—it’s used to describe a certain kind of anti-male hyperfeminism. But the more recent usage of the word—meaning disdain for the heterosexual lifestyle—arguably was popularized by Eminem, who responded to accusations that he was anti-gay by rapping, “Homophobic? Nah, you’re just heterophobic,” in his 2000 song “Criminal.” As a real-world phenomenon, however, this particular notion of heterophobia is only now gaining steam, as pop culture increasingly depicts straight men as Neanderthals. Yes, the depictions are jokey, but they underscore a new polarization in which gay men are portrayed as arbiters of taste and straight men are seen as just sort of . . . unfortunate. Clueless. Lumbering.

And what’s remarkable is that this condescending point of view is being internalized by straight guys—they’re being stereotyped not only by gays but also by their own team. (Hello, Adam Ca-rolla!) Straight, in other words, is the new square. Straight guys are subconsciously embracing a kind of vulgar mediocrity—a wobbly drive down Minivan Lane in pleated khakis and a rumpled T-shirt. Call it the media-enabled Straight Guy Inferiority Complex. [ more ... ]

super-star

i am watching the lastest episode of rockstar:supernova. i said to myself i had to blog this.

i had previously posted that i did not like the show as much as the first one, that is, rockstar: inxs. but, i'd also said that i will still watch it although not as religiously as going to the gym.

gym aside, rockstar: supernova is rocking so hard it kinda make season one like american idol...kinda. american idol is an entirely different ball game altogether. the singers are much better now...definitely in their elements. and very desperate too. the latest episode you get to see toby rand naked. no, not like a couple of weeks back during songs selection that he was asked to do to have the song he wanted. for the uninitiated, he ran butt naked around the pool. cute funny dude. anywho, he went topless. and, ryan star. ryan star. i know he has got potential from the beginning but i hate that he is so kiss-ass. like, trying really hard to kiss ass. i.e. dave navarro mentioned that at the end of the show, he'd like to see one of the singers break something - that was right after judging magni. ryan did just that in the follow up performance. of cos, magni was damn 'tulan'.

nonetheless, he totally rocked the house. best performance ever.

i am quite certain a guy will win ... is it ryan star? magni? toby? i hope to see ryan taking the role as the lead singer for supernova as much as i like magni to win.

like i said before i can be crazy /bias.

since we are at this, check out the website, www.rockstar.msn.com .... coolest website i've come across after a long long time.

wishlist

wishlist. i know i know. it is not even september yet and i have come out with a early xmas wishlist. but i can dream, rite? :p ...and if you haven't known already, i am diabolically materialistic. if that make any sense

meantime, i just got the news that mr. mission-not-so-impossible has been cut from Paramount pictures! reason? quoting yahoo news: "...because of his off-screen behavior, the chairman of the studio's parent company told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. Although Cruise recently topped Forbes magazine's annual list of the world's 100 most powerful celebrities, his latest film, "Mission: Impossible III" opened in May to lower-than-expected ticket sales.

Days later an opinion poll showed his star power had dimmed considerably in the eyes of the public. And last month, the Los Angeles Times reported that Paramount Chairman Brad Grey was in talks with representatives for Cruise and his production partner, Paula Wagner, seeking to slash the amount of money the studio pays their movie company, Cruise/Wagner Productions."

I think I wanna open a champagne for this news.

blowing whistle & some swooshing characters

This was an almost actual online chat session between two single & hopeful individuals (names had been changed to protect the um, individuals interest): -

Boy: hi. how are you?
Girl: hi. im good :)
Boy: asl?
Girl: 26 f pj. u?
Boy: 28 (#lie), m, pj too
*the conversation went on for a bit touching on the issue of work, and the shits*
Boy: so, what's ur name?
Girl: oh. u can call me marissa...
Boy: nice name. u can call me kenneth (#truth). wanna go out sometime?
*Then, they met in Coffee Beans*
Kenneth: Hi Marissa. Nice to meet you.
Marissa: Hi. *Blush*
They talked for abit about everything and anything under the weather although Kenneth was slightly disappointed and annoyed with her cos the actual Marissa is damn annoying.
M: y'know, kenneth. my name is not Marissa. Actually, my name is Kumari.
"Kumari? Damn. Why did she tell me her real name? KU-MA-RI! Fck! Fck! Fck!" Kenneth was obviously not pleased with that lie. SHOCKED, disappointed and speechless, he had to quickly come out with something intelligent and he says...
"Oh ok. At least we both share the same intial on our first name."

What the...

An Oklahoma judge has been sentenced to four years in prison for using a penis pump during a criminal trial. That's right, the man was seen to be using the device almost daily during the murder trial of a man on stand for the shaking death of a toddler. Apparently, a swooshing sound can be heard on court tapes for the trial and when asked about the sound, the judge said he hadn't heard it but would listen out for it.
He now says that the pump was a gag joke from a friend and he may have absentmindedly pumped it during court proceedings but that he never used it to masturbate. Did he absentmindedly strap it to himself beforehand too?

This judge is a real pervert. but i reckon he'll have a ball of a time in the lock-up. :P

Samy Vellu:Blow the whistle on contractors who blow it

KUALA LUMPUR:Frustrated with the increasing number of abandoned projects and shoddy work by contractors, the Government has decided to put people power into service. The public will be invited to become the eyes and ears of the Works Ministry to prevent hanky-panky and reduce costs arising from the need to revive abandoned projects and repair slipshod work.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said this would be part of a code of ethics and a performance-appraisal system for contractors likely to be implemented next year.He said it was aimed at preventing abuse of government projects. The public could contact the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) if they felt things were amiss with any government construction project. The code, drawn up by contractor associations and government departments, requires contractors to finish their job on time and according to specifications. Contractors will also have to sit for integrity courses.
"These are drastic measures. Once implemented, the code of ethics and appraisal system will have to be adhered to by contractors registered with the CIDB. "The interesting point is that the public will become whistle-blowers. Their complaints can be submitted to the CIDB, which will conduct an investigation. "The case will then be referred to the Contractors’ Code of Ethics Compliance Monitoring Committee for disciplinary action." [ more ]

I am not sure about you but I think the "people", that's me, you and you and you, have blown our whistles (damn, i'd giggle everytime i read this) long long time ago but it was blatantly ignored. whatever took them so long to finally realise the severity of these white elephants in this country; let's hope they handle this problem with integrity & not take another 20 yrs to solve it.

What cartoon character are you?

1st and foremorest, some corrections for some errors i've made on my prev. post. justin's last album was about three years ago. and, i don't think i mentioned Xtina was in a band but somehow the comparison with justin and beyonce and their background somehow made it as tho' i did. so, sinful you, that was inconsistency in my writing, i suppose. pardon moi

(10-16 points) You are Garfield:

You are very comfortable, easy going, and you definitely know how to have fun but sometimes you take it to an extreme where you can hurt others. You tend to ignore feelings of others. You always know what you are doing and you are always in control of your life. Others may not see things as you do, but that doesn't mean that you always have to do what is right. Try to remember your happy spirit may hurt you or others.

(18-26 points) You are Snoopy:

You are fun, you are very cool and popular. You always know what's in and you never are out of style. You are good at knowinghow to satisfy everyone else. You have probably disappeared for a few days more than once but you always come home with the family values that you learned. Being married and having children are important to you, but only after you have had your share of fun times.

(22-28 points) You are Arnold:

You have lots of friends and you are also popular, always willing to give advice and help out a person in need. You are very optimistic and you always see the brightside of things. Some good advice: try not to be too much of a dreamer, if not you will have many conflicts with life. When someone that is honest offeres you friendship, take it. Keep in touch with reality and life will be so much fun.

(29-34 points) You are Sponge Bob Square Pants:

You are the classic person that everyone loves. You are the best friend anyone could ever have and never want to loose. You never cause harm to anyone, and nobody will ever understand you or your feelings. You are usually used by others becasue of your good nature and loving qualities. Those who do respect you do so in the most honest way. Life is a journey, you always on an adventure, funny and calm, yet full of too many ups and downs for the most part. Stay away from traitors and jealous people as they are the ones that bring you down... then you will be stress free.

(35-42 points) You are Charlie Brown:

you are tender, you fall in love quickly but you are also very serious about all relationships. You are a family person. You call your mom every Sunday. You have many friends and may occasionally forget a few Birthdays. Don't let your passion confuse you with reality.

(43-50 points) You are Dexter:

You are smart and definitely a thinker. Every situation is fronted with a plan. You have a brilliant mind. You demonstrate very strong family principles. Maintain a stable routine but never ignore a bad situation when it comes upon you. When it comes to friends, your #1. Other people's problems are just that, their problems. You have selective hearing.

Sexy Back

the first time i heard that justin is goin' solo and will be performing on mtv music awards, i was curious. yes, i was curious how'd the curly-fries top dude from that boyband do & how his music will sound like. even jennifer lopez was anticipating to watch JT's performance on that nite when she was interviewed on the red carpet.

2 years now ... he's got a Sexy Back! well, maybe only ms D knows it. anyways, the world has waited far too long follow up to his successful eponymous album, which is sadly titled, Justified. suddenly, it is COOL to listen to Justin Timberlake. Yes, that dude from that boyband! since i am at this, same goes to beyonce & christina aguilera. but i digress.

i love the new single. once again he collaborated with the ingenius Timbaland, and again, this song is a refreshingly good song just like nelly's first single, 'Maneater'. JT's music is mainstream pop, no doubt. but the sound of his first single defies the definition of pop songs that record cos churn out every year (think paris hilton. and in the line up, ms nicole richie. next thing uknw, the olson twins wanna sing too!). and, i think a lot of ppl are not able to accept it at first cos it is different. justin, for a start, doesnt sound like justin. and it is not michael jacksonish. i remembered how tacky it was when he dressed and danced and sounded like michael when he performed 'Like I Love You' on mtv. that was when he was still with ms um, federline.

trailer trash aside, i'm hooked on 'Sexy Back' and although i could not grasp for the life in me what the mtv is all about, i like it. yes, i can be crazy/bias. i cant wait for the album now.

and since i am at it, i've got hold of one of beyonce's 'deja Vu' remixes, Freemasons Club Mix. super! and i think ms fergie's solo career mite turn out to be just as successful as her band, BEP. cos 'London Bridge' is rocking! i lurve my good music.

peace out.

the ego has landed

i had a great weekend last week meeting up with frens, catch up and all eventho' i cant exactly say about saturday night.

it was a meeting with a fren. the meeting was awkward at first, and tense during dinner to relax when we departed. i had to say it was a good decision made to have that meeting because it finally dawned on me why i did not want it in the first place and how drama it all ended.

i had learned and discovered a lot of things during our conversation. firstly, about friendship. friendship is a funny thing. amongst close frens, it is a love-hate relationship. don't you agree? we sometimes hate them cos we are too familiar with each other. for instance, when you're invited to some party or get together and you have to turn it down, they will get upset with you. on the other hand, we love them because we know they will be there for you even if we used to hate them. do i talk sense? i guess to continuously love your frens and not hate them so much is to be more tolerant and understanding, and be less critical about them. just take it easy

the other thing that i have learned or, should i say, discovered is that i am an egolomaniac! yes! my fren was so persistent that my ego is so huge, it is as big as a t-rex! ok, i have exaggerated a little bit but you knw what i mean?

let me tell you this. ego is not a bad thing. everyone has ego. when a person proclaims he/she does not have any ego, he/she has very low self-esteem and self-confidence. or, that they'd like you to believe he/she is a good person - not selfish, kind and understand and the sort lah, yknw.

how can no ego? puhlease! i'm fine with my ego, thank you every much. on the contrary, too much of it is like having too much money. you tend to brag about it without even knowing that you are bragging. that is bad.

so, to sum it up, it is not easy to get out of a relationship. you tend to be the bad person, you knw what i mean? as for frens who had been there for me and will continue to be there for me, i am very grateful for that and would like to thank you for all the support. and for frens who turned foes or opt to do so, i wish you all the best in life. no, i mean, wish you have a fucked up life. that's ego talk, yo.

meantime, i had posted pictures of my recent trip to tioman. man, i miss the trip. not ONLY the island, but the ppl i was with. it was so fun.

faster kill pussycat!

i am so tired!

yes, that is a disclaimer for this post that some of you might find it 'disturbing'. or, on the contrary, agree with me one hundred fucking percent. whichever side ur on, lemme warn you that you might suffer indignity & dizziness after reading it.

hahaha.... i think i am officially 'gila' already. the cause? 3 hrs sleep last nite. urgh...

i just simply do not understand how a person could be so ignorant, selfish & insolent. i am talking about a staff of mine who has gone AWOL for two days (incl. today) already. no telephone calls whatsoever. it is hardly a surprise to everyone in the co. including my boss with regard to his absenteeism. prep talk, we've done. wage deductions, we've done (multiple times). warning, well, we have not. this time, we definitely will. we deduced that people should be given chances. but enough is enough. fyi, his mother called the office just minutes ago asking for his whereabouts.

that is preposterous.

so these are some of the questions i'd like to ask or want answers. can a person be so ignorant & selfish? can he/she not understand what is word of honour? is it so difficult to call or sms? even after you have said that you would do it? do they even understand what is the meaning of integrity?

just so you know, it is not uncommon for people to basically not 'come back to you' even after they have said it. it is like, as if the phrase, 'let me get back to you' is 'don't bother about me'. you might think it is trivial but it is your word of honour and eventually your integrity that is at stake. it is really baffling cos this is what we also known as courtesy. i guess i can't expect so much, huh?

back to my staff. i hope he is still alive. my boss thinks he is *WH4

From the Discovery Travel & Living Team

"Yippee! Hurray! Woo-hoo!" Was not EXACTLY my reactions upon receiving this letter from them. i was a little ecstatic cos of the thought of being shortlisted. later that night, a fren emailed us to say that he also got shortlisted. that can't be coincidence, right? cos all 3 of us who wrote in got shortlisted! i betcha after they've seen my video audition, they'd think again... hahaha... i remembered a fren telling me that she hates the thought of a camera following her 24/7..."some more i am so ugly" was what i remembered she said ... i kinda felt that way, too. (no, not the ugly part. mind you, she's pretty lookin' and a smart gal, too); hence, my reluctance in doin' the camera audition. ad did his in tioman which turned out pretty cool. i hope he gets it, tho'

SO, anywho...i shall let this sit for a couple of days until i come up with an idea on how to do the audition video *cringe*

head don't lie

i went for a facial yesterday. it was @ this new place i've spotted on the paper last week which, was and still is, having a promo. and that, inadvertently, made me an opportunist. here's why:

"u want to make an appointment", asked the petite receptionist at the counter whom, i personally feel she needs an eye facial. badly.

"no, actually, cos i had made an appointment a couple days ago with ms. S", i replied feeling the chill of the salon. don't get me wrong. it is not 'The 6th Sense' kinda chill. more like, cold.

"then, can i have ur IC, please?" she asked rather straight fowardly. i quickly took out my IC before she demanded it the second time with that housewifey-tone, yaknw. besides, it is rather puzzling they want my IC. Reason? Registration purpose. DUH! Pass the damn form, and let me fill it up for ya! i didn't say that, of cos.

i waited for her to fill up the form. a lady who was carrying a handbag bearing the 'curious george' monkey face on it (TACKY!) asked for direction. petite dark-circled eye gal (PDCEG) helped her.

"but, i can't see it!" she raised her voice slightly frustrated. obviously, she followed PDCEG's direction but could not find the shop she was lookin' for. it was rather unfair and inappropriate for her to take it out on her because PDCEG was very patient and kind to actually bother to give her the direction. i wish i could say this to her, "then, ma'am, may i suggest you go to the GF and look for the INFO COUNTER!"

minutes passed. a curious but slightly 'pai seh' lady walked in, and PDCEG attended to a walk-in customer who was inquiring about the ad they've put up on the paper (like i did). at this juncture, readers, you would've guessed that PDCEG was the ONLY staff at the counter, thus, stressing her out & lookin' all sad. poor gal. on the other hand, her supervisor was more interested to ACT like a supervisor instead of assisting her i.e. walkin' around, smiling & hoping to look good at any given time. interestingly enough, her supervisor turned out to be my consultant AND the one who did my facial.

"sorry ah. took so long to register," she said rather unapologetically. more like, PR "sorry" yaknw?

"it's alright." i didn't put up a fight eventhough i was frustrated for making me wait, like, 20 mins.

i followed her to a small consultation room, which she, ms. smooth-skin, Glowing-mascara (SSGM), continued asking me more questions like, smoking, drinking, do you eat fruits and the like. she went on to take snapshots of my face with this gun-like camera and instantly "disgusting images" appeared on her computer screen. and the next few minutes went on in the light of these...oily, blackheads, facial, moisturiser .... wrong.... dead skins .... *cantonese words which i really cant translate* ... blackheads .... whiteheads ... blackheads ...

she had succeeded in making me feel bad about not taking good care of my face. truth is, i knew for a long time i needed a facial cos i spotted blackheads every fucking where on my face but i had procrastinated cos i wanna save. you see, it aint cheap to go for a facial although everytime i did it, it felt worth it :p we started the facial session after the consultation that lasted 15minutes. thank God! i hate ppl bringing me down on a level that only they, in this case, Ms. SSGM, could feel good and almighty about themselves. bear in mind tho' that i didn't call her a bitch as she is deemed the savvy beautician whilst i am the apathetic, not-so-metrosexual man who doesn't take good care of his face.

*the facial begun and lasted for approximately 2 hours. the were excruciating moments like, the part where she squeezed my life out ... i mean, my blackheads out from all over my face. excruciating moment#2: where she TALKED to me! gimme a break, lady! i wanna relax not talk to you! no, didn't say that, too. i just, nod, and mumbled*

post-facial: "i think you need a glass of hot water," Ms. SSGM said. "Yes, thank you." i replied qqqquiivering. the double mask she applied on my face which lasted forever totally chilled me out. it was excruciating moment #3 ... the mask.

after i had my hot water and came back from the loo, she started her post-facial consultation. i had expected her to sell me something that might cost me an arm and a leg. and i had my mind set that i was there just for the cheap facial (not for the free gift, really). she showed me the before-and-after facial treatment by taking gun-shots of my face and surprise, surprise! it is actually cleaner!! D-oh!

anyways, to cut the long story short, i turned her down and she was extremely disappointed with me saying things like i worked so hard on your face just now (you see, her England is quite terrorful wan). i just told her the often-used reply, "let me think about it." and i continued, "i don't need the free gift actually. i need to go already cos i've got dinner." and, promptly fumbled with my mobile phone texting to nobody.

see, i went to the salon as an opportunist with a clear mind that i will not be taken advantage of by their marketing strategies (fyi, all beauty salon sama-sama strategy - give you promo price for facial then sell u absolutely unimaginably expensive treatment!). so, im an opportunist's opportunist. do i make sense?

Waiting on the World to Change

"Available soon, features the album version of Waiting On The World To Change, plus a bonus acoustic version of the song featuring Ben Harper and the studio version of "Good Love Is On The Way." Oh, hey... Let's get to this. Good Love is not on the album, and though some of you may hear it and think it sounds perfectly CD-worthy, it just didn't match the tone of the entire CD. I've been around you all long enough to know that if it was on the disc you'd have said it shouldn't have been, anyway. You are all crazy. 600 and something reviews on iTunes? For a single? What was your last review, a candle?Making fun of your fans... Always a winning strategy." john mayer

*i cant wait. and, i've posted my cambodia pictures on multiple sites; yes, multiple sites and i've got nice compliments from frens. thank you all! xoxo

and i think im crzy

we celebrated carol's burfday in rakuzen a few weeks back, and, yes i've finally got the time to put the pics together and post it :p

the lunch buffet was excellent. the sashimi was so good (and fresh!) and the ambience was jus nice. not too noisy unlike some japanese buffet restaurant, and also there was no kiasu ppl piling up their plates with food they don't even knw how to pronounce it at the buffet spread or noisy kids running around like it is a playground.

certainly worth a visit again. i hope carol enjoyed her little lunch with us. nothin' special just catching up

all around the world ... and back

.....................
World News

MUMBAI, India (CNN) -- A series of seven explosions killed at least 174 people on crowded commuter trains and stations Tuesday evening in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai, police said. Officials said at least 464 people were injured in the blasts in the city's western suburbs as commuters made their way home. All seven blasts came within an 11-minute span, between 6:24 and 6:35 p.m. (12:54 and 1:05 p.m. GMT) more >

i think this is a cowardly act by the terrorists. targeting the poor who commute by train to the bustling city during peak hours is pathetic. just imagine you are in the train during that time and all you could think of is to get back home and be by your family. very sad news. i hope they catch the culprits, damn it.

A Bundle of Mystery (Yahoo news) -
The chatter on celeb gossip sites around the Web is growing louder and more intense. Even normally celeb-friendly US Magazine has waded into the fray and thoughtfully included a countdown clock on its front page. Yesterday, Hollywood-focused TMZ.com uncovered some official-looking paperwork. All are trying to answer one burning question—where in the world is Suri Cruise?

Searches on the unseen celeb offspring jumped 154% yesterday, as folks continued a vigilant search for information on the baby girl born to
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. The baby hasn't been spotted since she was born almost three months ago, inspiring many fruitless searches on "pictures of suri cruise" and "suri cruise photo." Curious searchers have been spurred on by the rampant rumors swirling online and are also turning to the Search box to ask "where is suri cruise" and more ominously, "does suri cruise exist." All of which is building towards a enormous burst of buzz when the first pics finally surface. Hmmm... could they have possibly planned such a publicity-generating stunt? Heavens, no!

here's one of the comments a reader had posted on the site:

i don't think that is shocking to know that Tom Cruise doesn't wanna show his baby. What happened was, he was just jealous that even when his baby was born before Shiloh Nouvel of the Jolie-Pitt bloodline, He was furious that people are so engrossed w/ the still coming Jolie-Pitt kiddo! He wanted pay back. And the longer he hides the baby, the higher the bid, the greater the thirst of the public eyes to see his offspring, the better it is for him. He is a hopeless man. He can hide his baby all he wants! In time, he will not get anything out of that, but doubt and people questioning his state of mind... Is he crazy? Who knows but Katie Holmes only? and who knows better?!

need i say more?

Sports

Tennis - So Nadal was beaten by Federer in Wimbledon (this is Federer's 4th straight Wimbledon win), and that my boss was and still relieved that her favourite beat the shits out of Nadal. but, really the champion in the court are the women's double Yan Zi and Zheng Jie from China. and no, i do not follow Wimbledon and not pretending that i am. i have got 'repeats' in the office broadcasted by none other than, yeap, u've guessed it, my boss. i think i'm beginning to like tennis and would really want to pursue it...someday.

Football - No comment. No butt joke. No chest pain. Nada.

i love this ...

Najib: I'll settle traffic fines

PUTRAJAYA (The Star) : Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says he will settle unpaid traffic summonses issued under his name and called on other ministers with outstanding fines to do so. Najib was responding to a Malaysiakini article which said he and 24 other ministers had not paid the summonses for several years.
“I know about the article. I know I am at number five. I do not drive, it is others who do and I did not know about it. They also did not tell me. I will settle it,” he told reporters yesterday. According to Malaysiakini, Najib’s accumulated summons stood at RM7,820 for 67 fines.

don't you just love our DPM? he's the man! but, how come i do not see policemen handcuffing him like how they did to the poor 17 years-old who had 55 summons totalling to slightly less than what our DPM received? maybe, our DPM REALLY is CLUELESS what he has received.
And here’s a little tip to get you by in life:
To test avocados, mangoes, or papayas for ripeness, gently fondle the fruit — never squeeze it — and if the flesh yields to the touch, it's ready to eat.

Broad Way Ah Beng?

i received two invitations to watch the opening night of 'Broadway Ah Beng' from the nice people at Gardner and Wife in the Actors Studio, Bangsar recently.

i had anticipated to watch this stand up comedy/musical for months already since i spotted the poster at the 'Coming Soon' highlights at the Actors Studio. and, by anticipation, i mean, i had quite high expectations of the show.

ravenous expectations, if u must know.

sadly, like everything else in life, one should not have and do not have ravenous expectations of a certain something or someone cos more often than not, we will end up disappointed, which sometimes, can lead to aggression and violence. fck. where did that come from? too much football and football news. sorry but, i digress.

the show turned out to be light hearted and a little tame. i wasn't at all laughing my ass off, tearing, & asking for an encore. no. the last time i laughed a lot till i teared was when i watched 'Over the Hedge'.

to cut the long story short, the show was just alright. maybe it was 80% in hokkien, which i don't quite understand. eventho' ad understood hokkien, he didn't exactly had a ball that night. maybe we had curry for dinner. and, speaking of curry, we smelled durian not once but twice during the 1 and a half hour show! gosh for a moment i thought that was a gas leakage in the building. we deduced it was the uncle behind us who probably had durian for dinner and burped. yucks.

again, i digress. so, where was i... yeah, the show was mostly in hokkien. and, his 8 minutes spoof on 'Miss Saigon' was nothing but cheap thrill lah. i enjoyed Miss Saigon tremendously but for him to spoof it, i thought it was cheap especially when he plays the role of the General in the UK version of 'Miss Saigon' not so long ago. overall, i will give this show a 3 out of 5.

anyways, if you plan to watch the show, please make sure you understood hokkien cos if you do, you will definitely enjoy yourself (more). and stay away from durians before the show, please. or, curry for that matter.

Bullet train to Singapore: From KL in 90 minutes

YTL proposes RM8 billion high-speed train link.KUALA LUMPUR: Imagine zipping in a bullet train from the KL Sentral station into the heart of Singapore in 90 minutes flat. That is something that will become a reality if tycoon Tan Sri Francis Yeoh’s plan to build and operate such a train service at a cost of up to RM8 billion takes off.

Yeoh told the New Straits Times that the Malaysian and Singapore Governments had been informed of the proposal by YTL Corp for the fast train service. If approved, the project will become the largest to be launched on a private finance initiative (PFI) basis, as encouraged under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

more on nst online

isn't this the most newsworthy news ever come out from out local dailies since ... since ... *scratching head* gee, i don't knw. since they saved the cub, nicki, from becoming herbal hot soup for the horny chinese men?

shoulda been done like 5 yrs ago, no? anyways, this is good news for the consumers, the retailers, and business ppl who travel back and forth to spore and vice versa. students will be very pleased, too. kudo to Datuk Yeoh.

and over to football (cheh, like i really dig football). but, seriously. up until now, the matches have been pretty unpredictable. who would've thought the German would lose to the Italians at last night's match? i heard from the radio djs on red fm, and they predicted the scores to be 2 - 0 and 2 - 1 to Germany. true, they are not football experts but i am pretty certain a lot of the people who banked on Germany did not expect them to lose. not on last night's match.

my prediction? nada.

my favourite? i quite dig zidane but i'd go for Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis over Zidane. we shall see. tonight's game will be fucking interesting.

fucking interesting

the devil wears red brief

I watched "Superman Returns" last weekend and i enjoyed it tremendously although it was a tad too long. i think that Brian Singer did a good job. there were quite a few "WHOAs", and "WAHs" in the cinema esp when Superman was dodging bullets... i thought that was quite hilarious. i guess most of the audience were there cos of the hype but not cos they are actually a fan of Superman. otherwise, they should not be surprised that Superman cannot be killed by multiple machine gun shots.

Brandon Routh, on the other hand, manages to live up to fans' expectations taking over the late Christopher Reeves role as Superman. in fact, he was brooding, and quite suave as Clark Kent although i have to say his features are a little "softer" as compared to Christopher Reeves. i guess it is cos of their age difference, too. to sum it up, it is worth the wait and worth the hype. go watch it if you have not and don't be surprised by how strong Superman is (and not compare him with Batman or Spiderman)

there are a few other movies that i am anticipating to watch: The Pirates of the Caribean - Dead Man's Chest, The Devil wears Prada starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway from the best selling book of the same name & My Super Ex-Girlfriend with Uma Thurman who is an X-girl ie superpower etc but also an emo wreck. i saw the trailer and it was dang funny!

on an unrelated note, i was over at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital (KLGH) in the city centre this afternoon to visit my baby niece who has been diagnosed for some blood-related illness (she was transfered from Sunway Hospital as recommended by the doctor). i have never been to KLGH in my life and my first visit to the hospital really shocked me. the hospital is quite run down, poorly managed car park (wait, i should say, non-managed car park), confusing signs or the lack of it, and definitely not patient-friendly. there were no security guards or traffic person present. imagine if there is an emergency during lunch time and there is a bottleneck at the exit/entrance of the hospital? i know there are a few exits/entrances but the roads are just too narrow!

KLGH is a public general hospital where lower income people seek for medical treatment here because it is a lot cheaper than other private company owned hospitals in Klang Valley. thus, it can be quite busy. in fact, it was pretty busy when i was there and the time that i had to spend to look for a car park can simply drive one person into road rage. fortunately, i bumped into my father and poor father was also lost cos it was his first time after almost a decade coming to KLGH. we managed to find the building...father was cursing in the car before he found me. cant blame him.

i find it really ironic that KLGH, the hospital run by the government, sandwiched between tall, big and beautiful buildings ie Istana Budaya, Institut Jantung Negara, KLCC etc is in a state that requires a complete overhaul in every aspects. i heard from father that they might move to Sg Buloh, which is approximately 30 - 45 minutes from the city. will it facilitates international standard medical facilities? is the car park properly managed? can the interns happily stay in the hospital to do their years instead of being stuck in the depressing state of the current KLGH? only time can tell. big leaders all over the country should act up and stop arguing who is right or wrong cos really, there are more important issues that the country need to sort out than just bickering.

better me better you

i have noticed. i have noticed recently that there is an emerging brand of "health products" in Klang Valley. and, it has become a successful direct marketing strategy drawn by one of those smart business persons just like the success stories that at one point of our life we all have heard from insurance companies, Amway, Cosway, Diamond water etc.

Herbalife. sounds familiar? kinda heard it from a friend or saw it somewhere? yes, it might be the car sticker on the back of the car that was in front of you this morning when you were on your way for breakfast. or, it could be one of your friends whom is taking the product/s and live to tell you the benefits it has given to him/her and how it has changed his/her life since. cliche, no? FYI, Herbalife markets weight management products among others (weight management products are supposedly their core products and their money-making products for the company).

no. i am not about to sell you any Herbalife products. neither am i goin' to start criticising it. i am not doin' any of the above. instead, i'd like to talk about Exercise.

Physical exercise, by definition of Wikipedia Encyclopedia, "is the performance of some activity in order to develop or maintain physical fitness and overall health. Exercises are generally grouped into three types depending on the overall effect they have on the human body:

According to research, frequent physical exericise is believed to prevent and cure major illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart diseases, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, imsonia and depression. And, exercise helps us to think and plan better by increasing the blood and oxygen flow to the brain. It also increases the growth factors that help creates new nerve cells and most importantly increase chemicals in the brain that help cognition.

point is, why rely solely on the consumption of products for weight management?

point is, do we even know for a fact that these products have done a breakthrough research and it is safe to consume it for weight lose? what will happened if we break out from it ie stop consuming it. can one still lose weight?

point is, physical exercise should be the way to weight management. proper diet should be the way to weight management. sufficient sleep/rest should be the way to weight management. not solely dependent on products in losing weight.

to quote Ron White from my previous post on the 3 Things we must do in our life, we must "exercise weekly in order to stimulate endorphins and maintain an energetic life. The exercise of walking to the kitchen or curling 12 ounces does not count as exercise."

He said, "I run 1 mile twice a week and 2-3 days a week do strength training. This is nothing difficult but it makes a major difference on my attitude."
